Else Kröner Fresenius Immunology Award
13 June 2012
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of Else Kröner (1925-1988), the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung foundation has created the Else Kröner Fresenius Immunology Award. Else Kröner was the adopted daughter of the pharmacist Eduard Fresenius, who owned the Hirsch Apotheke and the medical manufacturing company Fresenius. Else inherited both of these upon Eduard’s death and turned Fresenius into a large, successful, global player in the healthcare field. In 1983 Else founded the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung foundation with the mission to promote medical science and support humanitarian medical projects.
The Else Kröner Fresenius Immunology Award will reward pioneering discoveries in medical immunology but also promote significant research in translational immunology. As the award will be split into two parts; at least 0.5 million euros will be awarded to the winner(s) for past outstanding achievements, and up to 3.5 million euros will be given to translate those achievements into health benefits.
Candidates (individual or team) for the Else Kröner Fresenius Immunology Award must be fully active researchers, who have made ground breaking discoveries in medical immunology. They need to be in the position to accomplish the research intended in the next 3-5 years. Candidates will be proposed by IUIS member associations (of which the BSI is one). Self-nominations are possible and need to be accompanied by two letters of recommendation from at least two internationally leading researchers in immunology from two different countries.
The deadline for nominations has been extended, since the initial launch, to
1 August 2012. A shortlist of candidates will be made in early 2013 and the final decision is expected to be announced in May 2013. Further details of the award and the application form can be found
here.
